U.S. Supreme Court to hear several significant employment-related cases

The U.S. Supreme Court will be considering several important workplace-related cases throughout the next several months. Such cases include decisions about the definition of a supervisor under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) collective actions and when, under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA), a health benefits plan's reimbursement for medical expense may be limited. In addition, the court will hear cases involving affirmative action and class-action requirements.

Doubt expressed in employees' retirement readiness

In spite of companies' efforts to improve participation and raise deferral rates in 401(k) defined contribution plans, a recent survey by Towers Watson suggests that a majority of U.S. employers lack confidence in their employees' readiness for retirement. Although employer communication, transparency about fees and automated processes have boosted employee participation, employers remain concerned that their defined contribution plans are both misunderstood and not being fully utilized by employees.

Job security no longer top factor in workplace satisfaction

According to a recent survey published by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), the top driver of job satisfaction is now "opportunities to use skills and abilities." Job security moves to spot number two in the workplace satisfaction survey for the first time since 2007. Navigating the need for customer service with new health insurance exchanges

Health insurance exchanges, a key provision of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, are supposed to make it easy for the uninsured to compare various health plans. For those unfamiliar with benefits, deductibles and other healthcare lingo, however, comparing health plans is not so simple. To that end, states are looking to include insurance agents and brokers in meeting these customer service needs. Read more at 

Nucleus Research report positions Ceridian as leading HR provider

In its Human Resources Technology Value Matrix for the 2nd half of 2012, Nucleus Research placed Ceridian in the Leaders Quadrant, citing its new single application for payroll, workforce management and benefits: Ceridian Dayforce HCM. "No interfaces are required between various modules of the Dayforce HCM solution, a unique advantage which reduces the time companies spend on software administrative tasks (no more batches)," the report says.
