4 INSIGHTS to Take HR to the Next Level

What happens when more than 2,000 passionate HR professionals descend on Las Vegas for four days of learning and networking? Perspectives are broadened, challenges are simplified and valuable connections are made.

This summer Ceridian held its 29th annual customer forum, INSIGHTS, and saw firsthand the energy and excitement of today’s HR professionals. Attendees participated in more than 160 educational and deep dive software training sessions. Most importantly, the conference halls were filled with professionals discussing their HR successes, challenges and dreams for the future.

Read on for an insider’s look at the top sessions of the conference and the nuggets of wisdom shared with attendees.

Executive session: Adapting to the future of work

With today’s ever-changing workforce, HR departments can’t remain stagnant. During INSIGHTS, HR analyst and thought leader Jason Averbook challenged executives to adopt new talent management strategies that:

  1. Recruit people who fill a skills gap and match the values of the organization
  2. Create HR programs that nurture engagement through intuitive, seamless user experiences
  3. Use HR analytics to prescribe the next actions the business and its people should take.

Challenging attendees to embrace the future of work, Averbook stressed that “The future is now, and the time to take action is now. Every time you delay action, you lose a bit of your competitive edge.”

Keynote: Creating a “Delta” Culture

To be a leader of change, HR professionals must be innovative and persistent. Staff Sergeant Eric Maddox shared with INSIGHTS attendees how he led change in the military through his involvement in the capture of Saddam Hussein. Maddox shared three essential principles for igniting change:

  1. Strong culture. Foster an environment where employees are empowered to be agents of change.
  2. Innovation. Continually seek new ways to approach problems and don’t be afraid of failure or opposition.
  3. Teamwork. Develop teams that support one another and are invested in making the team the best it can be.

During Ceridian's annual conference Aron Ralston shared tips for creating a "Delta" culture.

Keynote: Embracing the power of failure and perseverance

Failure isn’t the end; it’s just the beginning. This was the message Girls Who Code founder and CEO Reshma Saujani shared with attendees during her keynote messages. Sharing her story of a failed election attempt, Saujani stressed the importance of embracing mistakes.

For Saujani, her campaign “failure” led to the creation of her non-profit that has introduced 40,000 girls to computer science. She urged attendees to help change the perception of women in technology by doing their part to build the pipeline for future female coders and technology specialists.

Keynote: Turning Boulders into Blessings

In the conference’s closing session, INSIGHTS attendees heard the inspiring story of Aron Ralston. The outdoorsman survived a hiking accident by amputating his right arm which was pinned by an 800-pound boulder. Despite the circumstance, Ralston found blessings from his boulder and challenged attendees to do the same.

“Life is full of boulders. So what do you do with these boulders? Do you push them away? Or do you welcome them with open arms and embrace them? The choice is yours,” Ralston said.
