Your Engagement Levels Stink. Now What?

HR professionals love to discuss, analyze and even argue about employee engagement. Despite all of this talk, organizations’ influence on employee engagement has been negligible.

Over the course of 15 years, Gallup has tracked employee engagement trends in the U.S. During this time, employee engagement has never risen above 33 percent. Employee attitudes toward work have remained unchanged, which highlights a harsh reality for organizations:

The majority of employee engagement strategies need improvement.

Employee engagement defined

There isn’t one way to define or measure employee engagement. The factors that influence this sought-after metric are as diverse and varied as the organizations trying to define it.

Perhaps it’s more useful to examine the other side of the equation: the two thirds of employees who are not engaged at work. Here’s how Gallup defines a disengaged employee:

“These employees are not [necessarily] hostile or disruptive. They show up and kill time, doing the minimum required with little extra effort to go out of their way for customers.”

Research shows that disengaged employees can negatively affect organizational productivity and profitability. Engaged employees, on the other hand, help move the organization forward by being involved in, enthusiastic about and committed to their work.

Moving the employee engagement needle

“Many organizations fall into the trap of focusing on measuring employee engagement rather than improving engagement. To truly influence employee engagement, organizations must focus on addressing engagement weaknesses rather than seeking data that reinforces what leaders and managers want to hear,” said Lisa Sterling, Executive Vice President and Chief People Officer at Ceridian.

Creating lasting change requires alignment between engagement strategies and the business’ other workplace priorities. Gallup’s research report states it best: “Engagement shouldn't be ‘something else’ an employee, manager or leader has to do – instead, it should be how work gets done.”
