As the world’s best gather to compete at the Olympics in Sochi next month, human resources professionals are taking stock of their best performing “players,” too.  

Results from the 2013 Towers Watson HR Service Delivery and Technology Survey found that the gold medal player for HR professionals is clearly technology. In fact, HR technology is so important that 53 percent of surveyed organizations plan to match last year’s investment levels, while more than a quarter (27 percent) plan to increase investments in 2014.

1. Implementing Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) solutions  
Of the organizations surveyed by Towers Watson, nearly one-third plan to implement a new HR management system in the near future. Close to 90 percent of those organizations will look at SaaS solutions as a replacement for their existing management system, and one in three will ultimately choose a SaaS-based solution, according to survey results.

Solutions supported in the cloud are gaining popularity for a number of reasons. For one, they can significantly reduce an organization’s operating costs. James Arsenault, manager, strategy consulting at Ceridian, explains, “With cloud-based solutions, HR teams can more predictably manage costs because they aren’t faced with ill-timed and expensive upgrades that slow down operations and require additional IT resources to implement.”

“Moreover,” Arsenault adds, “The best solutions enable companies to manage legislative and compliance updates, further saving companies time, money and, not to mention, big headaches for HR and payroll teams.”

2. Turning to mobile applications
The Towers Watson survey results suggest that currently only about one in 10 organizations use mobile applications for HR purposes; however, in the next 12-18 months, this trend is expected to increase to about one in four organizations.

Mobile tools are changing the game for HR partly because they can help increase employees’ engagement in their work and also because of their timesaving benefits. Mobile applications enable employees to view payroll deposits on the go, clock in and out, and review and submit time-off requests, among others, which may help them be more productive and more efficient on the job.

3. Ending the era of integration

For many HR and payroll professionals, one of their biggest pain points is dealing with multiple, disparate systems for HR, payroll, time and attendance, and benefits that don’t talk to each other. They end up spending a significant amount of time working through manual administrative processes rather than tackling core strategic initiatives, and in turn are left vulnerable to errors and compliance risk.

Arsenault says, “Unified human capital management systems clear up integration complexity and enable users to make more informed decisions based on real-time, quality data.”
