HR practice: Employers may be obligated to pay employees sent home from work due to flu symptoms

The federal government recommends sending employees home if they report to work with flu symptoms. If a collective bargaining agreement or employment contract does not cover the subject, employers generally have broad authority to send a sick employee home. Nonetheless, it is advisable for employers to have a detailed policy regarding sick leave, and a fit-for-work policy that addresses the problems created by employees who report to work sick.
