ARKANSAS: Railroad Employee Safety
A new law has been passed restricting hours of work for certain transportation drivers. The law states that drivers of contract carriers can not drive or be on duty for more than 10 hours following an eight-hour shift; 15 hours of combined on-duty and drive time since last obtaining eight consecutive hours of off-duty time; or 70 hours of on-duty time and drive time in any period of eight consecutive days. After 24 hours of being off duty, a driver begins a new, seven-consecutive-day period and on-duty time is reset to zero. In an emergency, two more hours may be allowed or required in order for the driver to complete the assignment or reach a safe place.
