| "In a 21st-century economy where the most valuable skill you can sell is your knowledge, education is the single best bet we can make," President Obama said in a May speech encouraging Americans to go back to school. Two recent articles in PersonnelToday quote surveys and studies in the UK that indicate skills shortages will affect the recovery of British organizations. How can your organization position itself to prosper as the economy recovers? Invest in your employees through training and development. Investing in the development of an employee's knowledge, skills, and abilities, demonstrates a commitment to continuous learning, growth and resource enhancement. Training offered by vendors and partners at low or no cost can help. Leverage training sessions from your EAP solutions provider "We are seeing that even in a slow economy many organizations are committed to providing training on compliance-related topics, such as harassment prevention, as well as training on specific technical skills or tools. Organizations seem to have tightened budgets or postponed training initiatives in the 'soft skills' topics such as management development," according to Diane Syer, senior training consultant for Ceridian LifeWorks. In addition to improving productivity, training is rated as one of the most effective employee retention tools available. Companies and individuals should explore all the low or no cost possibilities available to them through existing channels and providers, such as an EAP provider. "Many of our clients have training credits built into their contract for EAP or other employee benefits. They may choose to redeem those credits now, to provide training and continued investment in high-potential employees," says Syer. Ceridian clients with LifeWorks Online have instant access to a wide selection of training and podcasts. Additional training services available from Ceridian include 60 to 90 minute seminars that offer tips and strategies to help employees successfully meet the changing needs of their professional and personal lives. Information-packed 30-minute tip sessions are available for work environments in which employees have very limited time to attend training, but could benefit from information and practical suggestions. PerformanceLearning; sessions are designed to address company-specific business issues such as organizational change, performance management, sexual harassment, substance abuse, conflict management and workplace violence. In its 2009 Business Intelligence Industry Report, Chief Learning Officer magazine revealed that 49% of Business Intelligence Board Members had a more optimistic outlook for employee development in 2009. Anecdotal evidence collected with the study indicates an increased executive understanding of the need to build employees' skills in the face of global competition. By investing in the development of an employee's knowledge, skills and abilities, organizations are able to demonstrate a commitment to continuous learning, growth and resource enhancement. Distance learning and outsourced vendor- or tool-based training can play a critical role. A 2009 study by the American Society for Training & Development showed that 70% of respondents were looking for ways to become more efficient at delivering learning. Because of reduced internal resources, many organizations are partnering with think tanks, consultancies and institutes of higher learning to provide related or tangential training to business customers. In July, Ceridian hosted its 22nd annual INSIGHTS Customer Conference, where customers gathered for training on specific Ceridian solutions, industry issues and compliance, as well as professional development. Organizations can also outsource standalone technology or platform training on specific platforms or development tools, such as Microsoft SharePoint. Industry organizations, such as SHRM and APA provide industry and issue-specific training. An article in a previous issue of Ceridian Connection, "Keeping current with changing payroll legislation," provided a list of HR, payroll and benefits-related resources. Invest in yourself to weather the recession Don't forget to invest in yourself! Take advantage of in-house training from your organization, such as lunch-and-learn meetings about your organizations' products and services and issues facing your industry. To save money and time, attend local seminars and conferences offered by vendors, user groups and trade associations related to your role or your industry. Trusted partners can be sources of valuable -- and even objective -- training. If you are a Ceridian customer, take advantage of the expertise of your account management team, along with regional and national training opportunities such as distance learning, instructor-led local training and national conferences. |
